Charming San Francisco Kitchen Inspired by English Country Style

Wei Zhang Jul 3, 2026 6 min read

Some spaces resonate long after you've seen them, and this San Francisco kitchen is a perfect example. Nestled in a renovated 1914 Arts and Crafts residence, it's captured the hearts of many.

This kitchen has become a hallmark for a local design firm, showcasing a unique blend of city living with countryside allure. 'It aims to evoke an English country kitchen vibe, all while being in an urban setting,' explains Lynn Kloythanomsup, the firm's founder.

While its location adds to its intrigue, the kitchen's vintage-inspired color scheme and clever use of space create an inviting, timeless atmosphere that feels both lived-in and stylish.

A Thoughtful Blend of Materials

This kitchen engages the senses. Lynn describes it as featuring a 'farmhouse palette,' where a mix of rustic materials adds depth and texture.

Despite being brand new, the design team relocated the kitchen to maximize light through added windows. The color palette, with exposed brick, reclaimed beams, hand-painted floors, cedar paneling, and shiplap cabinets, creates an illusion of age.

'It's a combination of many striking elements that harmonize, making them less overwhelming,' Lynn notes. 'You might not notice all the details until you take a moment to absorb them.'

The interplay of materials allows for a cozy, inviting aesthetic. The client preferred a home that didn't feel overly polished, making Lynn's layered approach ideal for a space that feels rich in history.

Artfully Painted Wood Floors

This kitchen's many charms include its striking painted floors. At the project's conclusion, a decorative artist applied Benjamin Moore paint to create a checkerboard design.

Historically, painting floors has offered an economical way to add character, and this technique imparts an old-world charm.

'For me, painting a floor elevates something ordinary,' Lynn shares. The wood was carefully treated to highlight its grain, while the paint adds visual interest.

This flooring style may not suit everyone, particularly since lighter colors can show wear. 'You have to accept some changes over time,' Lynn admits. However, she believes the patina adds to the kitchen's inviting atmosphere.

The checkerboard pattern is straightforward, made up of large squares. Lynn encourages creativity, stating, 'You can experiment with more intricate designs – this one's just the beginning.'

An Inviting Nook

With limited space for a kitchen island, Lynn opted for a cozy banquette nestled by the window, allowing for informal gatherings.

'Every kitchen needs a spot where friends can relax and chat while cooking,' she states.

This nook provides just enough seating for a couple of guests, with thoughtful elements like storage drawers underneath and a cushioned seat for comfort. An antique breakfast table adds to the charm, paired with stylish sconces to define the area.

Smart Storage Solutions

While the overall design captivates, the kitchen's hidden details also shine. 'We innovate based on each client's needs,' Lynn shares about the custom storage solutions that enhance functionality.

The owner, an artist, inspired Lynn to create angled utensil drawers, reminiscent of paintbrush bins. A custom plate rack adds a vintage touch while keeping dishware accessible. 'The initial design was too polished, so we reimagined it with reclaimed wood for a rustic feel,' she explains.

A hallway pantry serves as a functional asset, designed to keep everything within reach, including a collection of about 60 wine glasses, ensuring guests don't have to search for anything.

To maintain an open atmosphere, Lynn chose glass doors for the pantry and added open shelving. This setup features rails for easy wine glass storage, complemented by bespoke cubbies for wine bottles and removable baskets for a touch of country flair.

Subtle Range Hood Design

To enhance the 'English country home' vibe, Lynn wrapped the range hood in faux brick tile, blending it seamlessly with the walls.

'We aim to make the range hood less of a focal point,' she explains. 'It's intriguing yet understated.' The rustic aesthetic is further emphasized by wooden trim along the edges.

This technique can vary; Lynn notes many now opt for tiled or plastered hoods. 'When the range hood blends with the walls, it creates a beautiful, elegant effect.'
