Let's begin with your early inspirations. As a child, what sparked your interest in interiors?

Ken Fulk: I was unaware that interior design was a profession. Growing up in a quaint Virginia town, my grandparents owned a farm. My grandmother, one of twelve siblings, managed the household with warmth and a hint of chaos. While maintaining a lovely home was expected, it was never a topic of discussion. Yet, a passion for enriching life was instilled in me – I felt like an outsider.

What made you stand out?

Ken Fulk: At four, I would proclaim to dinner guests my future Manhattan penthouse dreams, despite never leaving my county. By six, I was the orchestrator of family life, setting tables, arranging flowers, and even selecting buttons for my blazers. Every detail was my own design.

What attracted you to detail selection?

Ken Fulk: I believed that perfect experiences could enhance our lives. Despite my family's modest means, I yearned for perfection. I would plan Christmas festivities meticulously, from gift selection to the optimal time for picking the tree, ensuring it remained fresh for the big day. I felt that by setting the scene, we could all enjoy the moment more fully.

Did it seem like interior design was your destined career?

Ken Fulk: Not at all. I spent my twenties studying English and history in Virginia, loving architecture and historic homes. Moving to Boston, I landed a job I disliked, but my passion for maintaining a stylish apartment thrived, even if it stretched my budget.

What was your first home like?

Ken Fulk: My first home was an apartment in a converted historic building, once the parlor. It featured grand bay windows and high ceilings. At 23, I felt it was magnificent, even though my budget was tight. I invested in elegant touches like matching Ralph Lauren towels.

Did your passion for home decor lead you to a career in interiors?

Ken Fulk: After moving to California with my husband Kurt, we launched creative ventures, like producing shower curtains and pillows. After selling our children's linen business to Discovery, a friend offered me $15,000 to design their home, and I eagerly accepted. I even sanded the floors myself.

I took on various projects in places like Martha's Vineyard and the South of France, often earning little while acting as a concierge for clients. I orchestrated everything from weddings to home setups, reminiscent of my childhood role as a family event planner.

It all stemmed from my quirky background – my unique ability is seeing the world through optimistic lenses and understanding how to beautify any situation.

What are your essentials for enhancing beauty in the world?

Ken Fulk: I have a passion for exceptional lighting. It's shocking how often it's neglected. Working in the South of France, I've seen lovely restaurants that feel unwelcoming due to poor lighting. Everyone should have dimmer switches. I frequently change out bulbs to warm amber tones that create a cozy atmosphere – that's my secret ingredient.

Flowers also play a vital role in your designs; how so?

Ken Fulk: My love for flowers began in childhood, often clipping them from our garden. I adored arranging peonies from our backyard. Now, we have a dedicated floral department at our studio, crafting weekly arrangements for clients. Fresh flowers embody a space's emotional language.

Do you have favorite flowers for home decor?

Ken Fulk: I adore blooms that evoke a California spring, like garden roses, wisteria, and lilacs – scents that are enchanting yet subtle. Styling flowers and curating china for tables creates a ritual that enhances presence in the moment. It's all about crafting an atmosphere that makes you feel alive.

What's it like to be a guest at your home?

Ken Fulk: We rarely entertain at our San Francisco home, which serves as a peaceful retreat for Kurt, our dogs, and me. However, our Provincetown home is where we host friends in a relaxed manner.

I once felt everything needed to be perfect, but I learned to embrace the casual vibe of P-town. Here, every home is quirky, and we enjoy gatherings filled with ease. I prepare guests by letting them know to expect a laid-back atmosphere.

When I do entertain in San Francisco, I present a more polished table setting with well-arranged flowers and selected wines, but the focus remains on enjoyment rather than perfection. After all, the joy lies in connection, not flawlessness.

Has your design philosophy changed over time?

Ken Fulk: Not really; our approach remains consistent. Lacking formal training, I don't sketch plans like many designers. Instead, I visualize finished spaces in my mind, like cinematic scenes, understanding their needs.

With my team, we gather around a large table at the beginning of each project. I describe my vision, often saying things like, 'Imagine Jackie O in Gstaad meets a charming cowboy in 1950s Montana.' We translate this into a narrative for the project, avoiding Pinterest. I animate ideas through conversation, whether it's for a home, restaurant, or event.

Ken Fulk's journey is marked by instinct, creativity, and a steadfast belief in beauty's power to enhance everyday life. His evolution from a self-proclaimed 'ringmaster' to a global design figure reflects a commitment to creating meaningful, sensory-rich experiences.

By prioritizing intuition and storytelling over tradition, he designs spaces that feel vibrant and transformative. His insights on entertaining, creativity, and the emotional resonance of interiors underline a vital truth: design transcends mere aesthetics. It grounds us, connects us, and gifts us moments of joy.

Ultimately, Ken reminds us that thoughtfully designed environments do more than please the eye; they enrich our lives and our shared experiences.
