Charlie's garden illustrates the visual advantages of incorporating succulents and cacti. Dr. Amy Karpati, senior science advisor at Teatown Lake Reservation, shares her insights on following his lead.
"Choosing drought-tolerant plants is a sustainable choice that conserves water resources and saves homeowners money," she explains.
"When selecting plants, focus on species native to your area. These plants have adapted to local conditions and require less maintenance once established."
Dr. Karpati notes that while cacti and succulents thrive in desert climates, alternatives may be better suited for cooler regions.
In the northeast, consider native perennials like butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), showy goldenrod (Solidago speciosa), black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), narrowleaf mountain mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium), and anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum). These species thrive in sunny, dry soils. In the Midwest, look for plants typical of native prairies," she advises.
After planting, proper care is essential.
"Remember that new plants require additional watering to establish their root systems, but they'll become resilient once settled," she adds.
"These colorful plants not only beautify your space but also support local wildlife, including songbirds and butterflies."
