Olivia Park Jul 4, 2026 7 min read

Wondering how to clean patio pavers without using a pressure washer? Spring is the ideal time to learn effective cleaning methods.

As the weather warms up, enhancing your outdoor area becomes a priority. Our cleaning experts share their straightforward tips to prepare your patio for summer gatherings without relying on high-pressure equipment.

While pressure washers are often considered the go-to option, not everyone has access to one or is willing to rent it. Additionally, some may worry about damaging delicate surfaces when tackling seasonal cleaning tasks.

Cleaning Patio Pavers Without a Pressure Washer

Step 1: Prepare Your Area

Start by sweeping to eliminate dust, dirt, and debris

Cleaning your patio may seem overwhelming, but Rhonda Wilson, a quality lead cleaner, reassures us that 'cleaning a patio without a pressure washer feels like a workout, but it's completely manageable!'

Begin by clearing everything off your patio: move furniture, plant pots, and any other items before sweeping the area to collect dirt, leaves, and stones.

For effective sweeping, Rhonda suggests using a heavy-duty broom like the Libman Push Broom, which is designed to trap smaller debris while moving larger items without scattering them.

If there are dry leaves, lightly mist them with water using a spray bottle, such as the Bar5F Plastic Spray Bottle, to help them clump together for easier collection.

At this stage, you should also consider removing weeds and moss. Wearing comfortable gardening gloves, like the COOLJOB Gardening Gloves, can make this easier.

While you're at it, consider doing a little decluttering of your outdoor space. If you find items that haven't been used in a while, think about discarding, repairing, donating, or selling them.

Step 2: Wash and Rinse the Pavers

Before washing, first soak the pavers thoroughly.

Rhonda advises attaching a high-pressure nozzle to your hose and focusing on the gaps to loosen dirt. If your patio is particularly dirty, wear a poncho to protect against splashes.

For cleaning, mix warm water with dish soap like the Seventh Generation Dish Soap, which is natural and won't stain. Use a stiff brush for effective scrubbing.

Although this requires some effort, it pays off for a summer filled with outdoor dining. For tough stains, add a few drops of Dawn Ultra Dish Soap directly on the stain before scrubbing with a Stiff Bristle Brush.

If your patio is heavily stained, consider a specialized cleaner like Wet & Forget Outdoor Cleaner which can be applied with a garden sprayer. Its bleach-free formula removes mold and grime without scrubbing.

If you prefer natural options, cleaning with vinegar is effective. Mix Great Value Distilled White Vinegar with water in a 50:50 solution and scrub away stains.

Regardless of the method, rinse your patio thoroughly after scrubbing to remove any remaining residue, then let it dry completely. A warm, overcast day is ideal for this task, as the solution will dry evenly.

Once dry, check for any lingering stains,' advises Karina Toner, a cleaning expert. 'If any stubborn spots persist, repeat the cleaning or use a specialized paver stain remover.'

Step 3: Apply a Sealant

Applying a sealant enhances your patio's appearance and protects it from the elements

Once dry, Rhonda suggests applying a herbicide, like the Compare-N-Save Herbicide, to eradicate hidden weed roots in the pavers and between cracks.

Next, consider applying a protective sealant to enhance shine, prevent stains, and keep your patio looking pristine. Rhonda notes, 'Choose a wet-look sealant for a richer color or a matte finish for a natural look.'

This patio sealant provides a rich, low-gloss shine, enhancing your patio while preventing discoloration.
