Recent Updates

4 February 2025. This review has been updated to reflect insights on performance and design improvements since its initial launch.

Top robot vacuums enhance clean floors with innovative features, but they can be pricey. An older model like the iRobot Roomba j7+ offers essential capabilities at a more budget-friendly price.

The Roomba j7+ represents a solid option for those looking for a straightforward robot vacuum without the complexities of newer models. It comes from a reputable brand and effectively cleans floors.

I tested the Roomba j7+ in high-traffic areas, letting it tackle dirt and debris while refreshing the carpet where my dog loves to relax.

With Roomba's esteemed reputation, I anticipated that this older model would still compete well in terms of design, performance, and user-friendliness.

The iRobot Roomba j7+ is sure to impress. Its advanced obstacle detection is perfect for pet owners or parents with toys scattered about. It effectively navigates around cords, toys, and pet accidents, outperforming many top competitors. The included P.O.O.P. guarantee ensures a replacement if it encounters pet mess.

For those with a keen eye for design, its sleek profile is eye-catching. The clean base features a leather pull tab lid that adds a touch of luxury, rivaling newer models that double as furniture.

Tech enthusiasts will appreciate the app's capabilities, allowing for tracking cleaning areas, setting boundaries, and customizing functionality.

Additionally, those sensitive to common allergens will benefit from the closed-loop system, which includes a dust bag that seals upon removal, minimizing contact with debris.

The j7+ features a single button on its faceplate, which lights up in various colors to indicate progress or updates, such as docking status. It employs wall-following sensors and a camera for navigation, though it lacks the laser technology seen in some competitors.

Underneath, the j7+ is equipped with cliff and floor tracking sensors and incorporates iRobot's '3-Stage Cleaning System' to tackle dirt across different surfaces, featuring rubber brush rolls and an 'Edge-Sweeping Brush' for corners. While the suction power isn't quantified, our tests confirm it's competitive.

The clean base is compact and aesthetically pleasing, showcasing a channeled design. It automatically disposes of debris when docked, and an LED indicates connection status, bag fullness, or clogs.

Smart Mapping Technology
Initially, it may take a few runs to establish an accurate map, but the Roomba j7+ efficiently cleans in neat rows utilizing Imprint Smart Mapping Technology. It also features Dirt Detect™ technology for targeting messier areas and Reactive Sensor Technology to avoid obstacles. You can create multiple floor maps for different levels in your home.

iRobot App
The app allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and manage maps for different rooms, making it easy to clean up after guests or handle muddy shoes. You can designate Keep Out and Clean Zones, and the app provides insights into areas needing extra attention post-cleaning.

iRobot Genius Home Intelligence
With iRobot Genius, the vacuum learns your habits and cleaning preferences over time, adapting its schedule to fit your needs. It integrates with voice assistants for added convenience, and can even provide a cleaning time estimate through the iRobot Home App.

Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal
When the j7+ fills up, it automatically returns to the clean base, which holds up to 60 days of debris. It comes with a pre-installed bag and an extra one. A three-pack of replacement bags is priced at $19.99, so account for this cost when considering your purchase.

Using the iRobot Roomba j7+

Setup
Getting started was straightforward; I just plugged in the base for charging. The front camera must align with the dock's sensors for optimal charging.

The included 'Getting Started Guide' is basic, and I downloaded the app for further assistance. The comprehensive owner's guide is digital-only.

First Run
I was eager to see the mapping process, so I started a cycle before it was fully charged. It navigated the space methodically, then returned to charge before continuing. The mapping required a few cycles for completion, but once ready, I could set room boundaries.

To help test the obstacle detection, I placed a toy to simulate pet waste, which it successfully avoided and flagged as a potential obstacle after cleaning.

After each cycle, the j7+ provides a map of cleaned areas and notes any obstacles encountered, allowing you to mark them as necessary. This adaptability makes it responsive to your home's cleaning routine.

It effectively detected and avoided various items such as cords and toys. Occasionally, it mistook patterns on my carpet for pet waste, allowing me to adjust the obstacle settings as needed.

So, how well does it clean? During initial runs, it quickly filled with dust and debris, returning to the dock to empty and then resuming its work.

Whether on carpets or hard floors, it effectively picked up visible debris without fuss. It methodically cleaned in rows and focused extra attention on messier areas as needed. While there's no adjustable suction power, you can set cleaning passes to daily or extra attention for specific rooms.

Edge cleaning was satisfactory, though for those meticulous about tight corners, a dedicated handheld vacuum might be more effective.

The j7+ operates efficiently but requires some maintenance. The clean base self-cleans, and the dust bag needs replacing when full, depending on usage frequency.

Long hair can entangle in the brush rolls, which are removable, though the Edge-Sweeping Brush may require a screwdriver for removal. Most hair can be cleared without tools, but heavy shedders might find this challenging.

Once a month, clean the sensors and camera with a soft cloth. Check the HEPA filter for debris and clear any clogs from the front castor wheel to maintain optimal performance.

Comparing the iRobot Roomba j7+

As the j7+ ages, it becomes more budget-friendly compared to newer models packed with advanced tech.

This model is just behind the previous flagship iRobot Roomba S9+, which features a D-shape for improved corner cleaning and boasts four times the suction power.

Newer options, like the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+, are now our top pick, offering mopping capabilities, superior navigation, and robust suction, alongside a stylish cleaning base. The iRobot Roomba Combo 10 Max is under review and is anticipated to be the best Roomba yet, depending on your budget.

If you're seeking an exceptional robot vacuum, the Eufy S1 Pro Omni is a newer, pricier option. It excels at both vacuuming and mopping, navigates furniture seamlessly, and features a clean base that self-cleans and dries the mop, ensuring minimal user involvement.

Should You Purchase the iRobot Roomba j7+?

If you appreciate a stylish, functional design and intelligent obstacle detection, the iRobot Roomba j7+ is an excellent choice. Its advanced navigation and obstacle avoidance are invaluable for homes with occasional clutter.

There were some delays with the iRobot Home app, such as connecting to the robot or scheduling cleanings, but these software issues can be resolved with updates.

My Roomba has become an essential part of my household, providing thorough cleaning while I attend to other tasks, despite my dog's initial apprehension.
