Ellen Pao on Diversity and Inclusion in the Tech Industry
Discover how one woman's fight against gender discrimination transformed the tech landscape. Plus, vital takeaways for promoting diversity in 2023.
Many figures have emerged from the #MeToo movement, motivating women across various fields to confront issues like sexual harassment and inequitable access in the workplace. In the tech sector—often dominated by white males—Ellen Pao stands out as a pivotal leader.
Ten years ago, Ellen was a partner at the prominent venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, where she and her female peers faced exclusion from meetings, networking, and were penalized for voicing their concerns. This experience prompted her to file a gender discrimination lawsuit in 2012, igniting a national dialogue about sexism in tech and giving women a platform to speak out. This impactful moment has been termed the “Pao Effect.”
Later, she took on the role of interim CEO at Reddit, where she enforced policies against misogyny and harassment. In 2016, Ellen, along with seven other women in tech, founded Project Include, a nonprofit aimed at enhancing diversity and inclusion in tech and beyond. Most recently, she penned the book “Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change,” detailing her journey toward creating more equitable workplaces.
Listen to Ellen discuss the persistent diversity challenges in the tech industry. The Equal Opportunity Employment Commission reports that the representation of Black and Latinx individuals in tech remains low. Studies reveal that women and Asian Americans face hurdles in promotion. Ellen reflects on how these systemic problems affected her career and those of her female colleagues at Kleiner Perkins.
We also explore the misconception that the tech industry is a meritocracy where hard work guarantees success. Ellen emphasizes how this belief can mislead marginalized workers into self-blame for unequal treatment. She experienced this personally at Kleiner Perkins, where inconsistent feedback left her grappling with self-doubt, hindering her professional growth.
“At one point, I doubted myself,” she recalls. “I was told I was ‘too aggressive’ and then ‘too quiet’—it felt impossible to meet their expectations. Consistency was lacking, making success elusive.”
Additionally, we discuss the significant challenges facing the tech industry in 2022, including mass layoffs and leadership controversies surrounding figures like Elon Musk and Sam Bankman-Fried. Ellen connects these financial difficulties to ongoing diversity and inclusion issues, offering her top advice for leaders and employees striving to foster better environments for marginalized groups.
