Dyson Gen5detect Review: The Most Powerful Cordless Vacuum Yet

Anna Yang Jul 4, 2026 12 min read

The Dyson Gen5detect stands out as an exceptionally powerful vacuum. While it impressed me with its laser precision and left my floors sparkling clean, I'm still debating whether its price is justifiable, especially with the added weight.

Pros

  • Outstanding suction performance

  • Lifetime washable HEPA filter

  • Latest cordless vacuum tech

  • Compatible with all types of flooring

  • Convenient on/off button

Cons

  • High price point

  • Relatively heavy

  • Particle feedback may be excessive

With extensive experience testing vacuums, Dyson consistently impresses. Their innovations have set industry standards, and the Gen5detect aims to uphold that reputation. Claimed as the world's most powerful HEPA cordless vacuum, it offers an impressive 70-minute runtime, making it the longest-lasting cordless model from Dyson. Upgrades like enhanced illumination on the Fluffy Optic floor head are also noteworthy.

After reviewing over a hundred vacuums, I'm eager to see how this one performs in a real household setting. The Gen5detect indeed lives up to the hype, delivering perhaps the best vacuum experience available today. However, potential buyers should consider its weight and steep price. For those seeking the ultimate in cleaning power, this is the vacuum to own.

Who is it for?

The Gen5detect is ideal for smaller spaces. For larger homes, consider the Dyson Gen5outsize, which offers a wider floor head and larger bin. However, the Gen5detect effectively serves small to medium homes and apartments.

Its two floorheads ensure versatility for various surfaces, transitioning smoothly from hard floors to carpets.

Unboxing and Setup

As expected from Dyson, assembly was straightforward. After removing it from recyclable packaging, I had it ready to charge in under a minute.

You can either plug the charger directly into the battery or install the wall dock for neat storage and charging.

Notably, this model ditches the trigger handle found in previous cordless iterations. Instead, a single button controls power, making it easier for those who struggle with prolonged pressure.

It features three power settings: eco, auto, and boost. Dyson claims up to 70 minutes in eco mode, while auto adjusts power for optimal battery life. Boost provides maximum suction but for a limited time—averaging just 12 minutes, which is minimal for deep cleaning.

Continuing the trend, the Gen5detect comes with a Piezo particle sensor that shows real-time feedback on dust particle size. While impressive, this feature seems more beneficial to Dyson engineers than everyday users who just want clean floors.

This model includes two floorheads: the Fluffy Optic cleaner head, which excels on hard surfaces with its laser functionality, and the Digital Motorbar cleaner head, which adapts suction power based on the surface. It also features hair removal vanes to prevent tangling.

The oddly named 'hair screw' tool effectively cleans pet beds, car seats, and stairs. Additionally, a combination tool serves multiple purposes, and a built-in dusting and crevice tool is conveniently stored within the wand.

Performance: Carpet

After testing numerous vacuums, I can confidently say the suction power of the Gen5detect is remarkable. It lifted embedded dirt from my carpets that I didn't think possible.

While cleaning my long-pile area rug, the roller occasionally stopped, but the quantity of fine sand collected was astonishing for a home far from the beach.

In auto mode, the vacuum adjusts power as you clean, preserving battery life while effectively covering multiple rooms. However, boost mode drained the battery after just 12 minutes—barely enough time for a quick clean.

Despite its heft, the Gen5detect's power compensates for the weight. Yes, it's heavier than other models, but those often compromise on suction. I'd rather have a vacuum that excels in cleaning than one that's lighter but less effective.

Boost mode registered 83dB on my meter, a typical sound level for vacuums. Eco mode reduced the noise to a more tolerable 70dB, consistent across both carpets and hard floors.

Performance: Hard Floors

Initially, my wooden floors appeared clean, but the laser revealed hidden dust and dirt, compelling me to vacuum more frequently. While effective in full light, the laser shines best in dim conditions, clearly highlighting neglected areas.

For edge cleaning, I tested by spilling crumbs and flour near the baseboards. The vacuum picked up about 95% of the debris, leaving some crumbs behind. However, switching to the crevice tool allowed me to reach every corner effectively.

Performance: Handheld Attachments

Switching to the built-in crevice tool is seamless, making it easy to tackle tight spots. I found the hair screw tool ideal for cleaning my sofas, effortlessly collecting crumbs and pet hair.

I used the vacuum on both carpeted and wooden stairs with equal success. Depending on the situation, both the main floorhead and smaller tools performed well.

While reviewing this vacuum, I also tidied my car. Although the Gen5detect could clean the seats and carpets, it was cumbersome for tight spots. The crevice tool was too wide to access some gaps, which limited its effectiveness.

Dyson offers additional compatible tools for various tasks, including a slim crevice tool, allowing customization for specific needs at an extra cost.

However, the weight of the vacuum made extended handheld use tiring, especially when cleaning the car or removing cobwebs.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Emptying the Dyson Gen5detect

Emptying the vacuum bin is straightforward—just point it into the trash and push the lever for a mess-free disposal. Allergy sufferers may want to do this outdoors to avoid stirring up allergens.

The HEPA filter is designed for a lifetime, eliminating replacement costs. It's washable for easy upkeep. Similarly, the Fluffy Optic roller can be cleaned to maintain efficiency. Minimal maintenance is required, though some parts can be disassembled for thorough cleaning when necessary.

Comparison with Other Models

For those on a budget, the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute offers excellent value without sacrificing power. It's significantly cheaper than the Gen5detect, priced around $1000. While this model is indeed the best I've tested, that price is substantial.

Shark is a notable competitor, with the Shark Vertex Pro Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum providing user-friendly features at a more affordable price. Though it lacks some advanced features of the Dyson, it's a solid vacuum at half the cost.

Should You Invest in the Dyson Gen5detect?

Performance-wise, this Dyson is likely the most powerful cordless vacuum I've encountered. Its sturdy build and versatile tools are excellent for various cleaning tasks.

That said, it's not without flaws. The weight can be cumbersome, especially in tight spaces like car interiors. It's a significant investment, but for those with the budget, you won't find a superior option.

Testing Methodology

Our testing process for vacuums is thorough. I used the Gen5detect extensively in my home, cleaning multiple floor types and even tidying my car. I also tackled hard surfaces like shelving and overhead areas to assess its overall cleaning capabilities.
