Do Air Purifiers Eliminate Cigarette Odors? Here's What You Need to Know

Air purifiers are versatile devices that cleanse the air by removing various pollutants like dust, pollen, and pet dander. But do they really tackle cigarette odors?

The top air purifiers are designed to filter out harmful particles found in wildfire smoke, so it seems logical they could handle cigarette smoke. However, these two types of smoke involve different substances with distinct chemical properties, which means their filtration processes differ.

Having tested numerous air purifiers, I can confirm that while they can address cigarette smoke, they may not completely eliminate the smell. Let's explore how effective they truly are against cigarette odors.

How Do Air Purifiers Tackle Cigarette Odors?

The answer is yes, but various factors influence how effectively each air purifier can manage cigarette smoke. To determine which units are the most effective, we must first understand the particles present in tobacco smoke and how air purifiers filter them.

Air purifiers consist of a fan that draws air from the room, filtering out particles as the air circulates through the device. Therefore, having a powerful fan is crucial for pulling smoke from across the space. Additionally, not all filters perform the same; the effectiveness of a purifier depends on its filtration system's quality and the size of particles it can capture.

Particles in the air are typically measured in microns (1 micron equals 1/1000 mm, or 1/25,000 of an inch). Tobacco smoke consists of a mix of particles; according to Breathing Space, the most common sizes range from 0.3 to 0.5 microns, with some of the most harmful particles being as small as 0.1 micron.

The most effective air purifiers utilize HEPA filters (high-efficiency particulate air filters) capable of trapping much smaller particles than conventional filters. According to air quality experts at Molekule, a HEPA filter can remove 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter.

Thus, an air purifier equipped with a True HEPA filter can capture particles as small as 0.3 microns, which covers most common tobacco smoke particles but not the even smaller 0.1-micron particles.

While HEPA filters must adhere to minimum performance standards, many surpass these benchmarks. Numerous brands offer advanced filters that can trap particles down to 0.1 microns — ideal for addressing cigarette smoke.

This explains how air purifiers effectively draw in smoke and eliminate harmful particles, but what about the lingering odor? To truly eradicate odors from your indoor environment, your purifier must also feature an activated carbon filter.

The particles responsible for carrying harmful chemicals and odors are too minuscule for a HEPA filter to capture. Instead, a carbon filter, located behind the HEPA filter, absorbs these particles, preventing them from re-entering the room. Similar to HEPA filters, carbon filters vary in design and size; generally, the greater the amount of activated carbon, the more effective it will be.

So indeed, air purifiers can reduce both cigarette smoke and odors. The extent of their effectiveness relies on the quality of the HEPA filter and the level of activated carbon used in the filtration system. Many products will provide these specifications.

For an additional layer of protection, some air purifiers, like Molekule's models, incorporate a third filtration method: PECO (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation) filtration. This innovative technology breaks down organic pollutants at the molecular level, converting harmful particles and pathogens into harmless gases.

The Molekule Air Pro purifier features a PECO + HEPA Tri-Power filter designed to eliminate toxic chemicals found in smoke. Another notable feature is its Auto Protect mode, which automatically adjusts the fan speed in response to rising particle or chemical levels.

Choosing the right air purifier can significantly improve the air quality in your home.
