Understanding the cost to run a tumble dryer is increasingly important, especially with rising energy prices.

Some questions, like what the delicate setting on a tumble dryer is, have straightforward answers. However, calculating running costs can be trickier than checking a tumble dryer temperature guide.

Experts weigh in on the potential costs incurred with each use and share strategies to help you save money.

What is the cost to use a tumble dryer?

'Running a tumble dryer in the US varies by state,' notes Damian Serwin, an investment banking analyst. 'On average, tumble dryers consume about two to six kilowatt-hours of electricity, which you can use to calculate your expenses.'

'With an average rate of 15 cents per kilowatt-hour, expect to pay 30 to 90 cents per hour for operation. For a typical weekly load, that translates to around $15.6 to $46.8 for tumble drying alone.'

Jason Porter, a senior investment manager, estimates the yearly cost for an 8 kg tumble dryer ranges between $104 to $224. Actual expenses depend on your specific model, its energy efficiency, and usage frequency.

'Families doing three loads weekly might spend about $118 annually on tumble drying,' he adds. 'Based on my findings, running a dryer for two hours weekly from October could cost around $104 per year.

Ways to lower tumble dryer expenses

Learning how to select energy-efficient appliances is one of the best methods to minimize costs.

'Opt for a more energy-efficient model; there are many options available,' advises Damian. He also recommends running full loads instead of a few items at a time and keeping up with maintenance to avoid high repair bills.

'You can shorten drying times by grouping similar fabrics, which requires a bit of planning with your wash cycles,' he adds. Alternatively, Robert Johnson, marketing director at a major appliance retailer, suggests using a high-speed spin to remove excess water before drying.

Utilizing the sensor dry button can also help reduce drying durations, along with saving energy while doing laundry.

Is it costly to use a dryer?

Your tumble dryer's operation cost primarily hinges on its model and your lifestyle choices. Robert Johnson emphasizes that upgrading to a modern heat pump dryer can significantly lower expenses.

'These models boast better energy efficiency compared to traditional vented dryers,' he explains.

Jason Porter advises increasing your washing machine's spin speed to help clothes dry faster in the dryer. 'Damp items take longer to dry, which strains the dryer,' he says. 'Using a higher spin setting can eliminate extra water before drying.' Additionally, if you have a less expensive off-peak rate, consider using the delay start feature to run your dryer overnight.
