American Airlines Elite Status: Is It Still Worth It for Travelers?
Athens, Greece is a summer getaway for me and my opportunity to utilize American Airlines mileage awards before they expire.
Last year, I shared my journey to earning my first airline elite status, which was American Airlines Platinum. I found my way to Platinum Pro status this year through some clever strategies.
However, American Airlines has recently revised the mileage upgrade system, making upgrades pricier and eliminating the mileage upgrade awards that were a significant perk for many. Previously, these awards allowed travelers to elevate from economy to business on international flights for $350 plus 25,000 miles, subject to availability and priority based on status. Many enjoyed the possibility of last-minute upgrades 24 hours before departure.
This trend appears to be consistent among airlines, as United Airlines also announced changes recently, as reported by The Points Guy. While every traveler has unique goals, here are a few considerations regarding the new American Airlines policies.
Understanding the New Instant Upgrades from American Airlines
One of the standout benefits of elite status with American Airlines was the ability to upgrade to business class on long-haul flights. This is now more costly due to the revised upgrade policy.
After booking your flight, you can request upgrades through the website or app, available for cash or miles. There's no cash copayment needed when using miles.
While it may seem appealing to upgrade early, the options may not always be cost-effective. I have a flight from Charlotte, NC to Athens, Greece with a layover in Philly for work this August. (I intentionally added the layover to visit the new American Airlines Admirals Club and return to the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge, one of the finest lounges I've been to.) (Update – I didn't secure the upgrade despite being top of the list, but the new Flagship Lounge is small yet impressive.)
The one-way fare for this trip totaled $827, including approximately $250 in taxes. When I booked, I called to get on the mileage upgrade waitlist. This was removed post-policy change, so I had to call again to rejoin the list, and now I can't see the instant upgrade options online anymore.
Before rejoining the list, I had the following instant upgrade options:
Upgrade the Charlotte to Philly leg (1.75 hours) for $131 or about 29,000 miles.
For the international segment from Philly to Athens (9.5 hours), the offer was an upgrade to business class for 411,000 miles and $3,110, a poor value compared to the mileage award. The full price for business class is $5,943 or 320,500 miles plus a $5.60 fee. This indicates that purchasing a business class seat outright with miles is cheaper than upgrading!
Once I rejoined the mileage upgrade waitlist, the option for instant upgrades vanished. The ability to use mileage upgrades ends on August 12, 2025.
Do Instant Upgrades Impact Complimentary Upgrades on Domestic Flights?
One appealing aspect of American Airlines status is the complimentary upgrades on domestic flights, which are granted up to 72 hours prior to departure. Based on my experience, these often occur the day of the flight. Fortunately, these upgrades remain unaffected by the new policy.
Are Systemwide Upgrades Impacted by Instant Upgrades?
No, systemwide upgrades are not impacted. They are part of the Loyalty Point Rewards for members who accumulate 175,000 loyalty points or more during a qualification period, allowing you to elevate your booked flight to the next class of service.
Evaluating Mileage Upgrades: When Are They Worth It?
The Points Guy offers monthly valuations to help assess the worth of points across major airlines, credit cards, and hotels. In June 2025, American Airlines miles were valued at 1.5 cents each, making the 411,000-mile proposal for my Philly to Athens flight a poor choice. This translates to $6,165, exceeding the full-price fare. This information can guide your judgment on upgrade deals. Ultimately, it's a personal choice based on your goals, comfort, and financial situation. Upgrade options are likely to fluctuate based on demand. I can't confirm this as I no longer have access to those options for my flight.

Is American Airlines Elite Status Still Worth Pursuing?
With mileage upgrades removed, maintaining American Airlines Platinum Pro status seems less beneficial, whereas Platinum still holds value for me. It ultimately hinges on your travel priorities. Let's explore this below.
Advantages of American Airlines Platinum Status
Main Cabin Extra: After booking, you gain access to extra-leg room seats (valued up to $100).
60% Status Mileage Bonus: For every dollar spent on flights, you earn a 60% bonus, helping you achieve status faster.
Two Free Checked Bags with Priority Handling.
Priority Lanes for Check-in, Security, and Boarding: This is crucial for me as it allows me to skip checking my carry-on.
Oneworld Sapphire Status: This grants lounge access when flying with Oneworld airlines.
Currently, the only additional benefit of Platinum Pro is achieving Oneworld Emerald status, which places you in a higher boarding group and grants access to slightly better lounges. Plus, you receive an 80% mile bonus on every dollar spent and three free checked bags with priority handling. If you reach 175,000 points, a systemwide upgrade is one of the rewards available.
Despite traveling six to eight months each year, I don't find value in retaining Platinum Pro status. It required some ingenuity to earn this status this year, which I illustrated with pie charts in my previous post. Yet, I still fell short of the 175,000-point requirement. (It takes 125,000 points to achieve Platinum Pro, and I maxed out at 130,000.) Right now,
Platinum status offers the best perks with free Main Cabin Extra seats, priority boarding, and lounge access.
If you frequently fly business class with paid fares or have high credit card spend, reaching this status could be more manageable. For the average traveler like me, it seems unattainable. Although American Airlines presents these updates as advantageous, it appears to benefit them more than travelers.
